Colby Jordan is the founder of Minnie Muse, a website devoted to celebrating connections across creative fields and transcending the typical silos that limit imagination. Her perspective is insightful, inspiring, and mind-expanding. After reading Minnie Muse, you’ll never look at a sneaker the same way again. In our Session, Colby shares her favorite works of art, the novel that made her feel like an adult, and the best gift she ever received.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?

Curiosity is king!

WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU LEARNED IN HIGH SCHOOL?

I learned a lot about the importance of working hard and about time management. It is also when I realized how special and necessary it is to have a passion.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST PET PEEVE?

When someone has a poor handshake – either it is not firm or the person does not look you in the eyes; OR, god forbid, both!

WHAT DO YOU WEAR THAT MAKES YOU FEEL STRONG?

My Minnie Muse Logo pin and comfortable shoes; when your feet don’t hurt the opportunities are endless!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WITH A BROKEN HEART?

Everything happens for a reason.

WHAT IS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?

Too much! My husband always tells me ‘no camping’. I usually have a stack of books, a notepad, a large bottle of water, my computer, earphones and hand cream.

WHAT IS YOUR BAD DAY BACKUP PLAN?

Sushi lunch (or dinner) with my husband or girlfriends.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

When you wake up each morning happy, inspired and ready to conquer the day, excited by what you are doing and never willing to give up.

BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?

Always have a smile on your face.

WHAT MAKES YOU FORGET TO EAT?

Unfortunately for me… I always find time to eat 😉

WHAT DID YOUR 8 YEAR-OLD SELF LOVE DOING?

When I was 8 years old you could either find me coloring, doing arts and crafts, or looking through fashion magazines.

WHAT 3 THINGS WOULD YOU GRAB IN A FIRE?

My dog, Mugi Mugrabi, my computer and my ‘treasure box’, which is a shoe box housing notes, photos and memorabilia I have been collecting since middle school.

FAVORITE WORK OF ART?

Too many to name! Either a Ferragosto or Bolsena painting by Cy Twombly or a Klimt. Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles is also a favorite of mine.

FAVORITE BOOK?

To Kill a Mockingbird,” was the first ‘grown up’ book that I read by myself. I remember feeling a tremendous sense of accomplishment when I finished it. The story and memories will always be near and dear to me.

WHAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR PARENTS ABOUT YOU?

I used to go to bed so early each day but I have recently become a night owl. Once I start researching or writing in the evening it is hard to get me away from my computer screen.

BEST GIFT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

The best gift that I ever received was a charm necklace from my grandmother. She spent 60 years collecting the charms; each one represents a significant event or story. It now weighs about five pounds and has over 50 memories attached to it.
