New York Times best-selling author, nutritionist and beauty expert unlearns beliefs from high school, dawdles on NYC streets and discovers food is the best beauty product
WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?
Progress, not perfection.
WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU LEARNED IN HIGH SCHOOL?
I think high school is a really insecure time (at least for me) and I’m actually trying to UNLEARN beliefs from high school about trying to dim my light to fit in!
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST PET PEEVE?
Blaming others for our feelings. We truly are responsible for them! When we really get that, it’s unbelievably empowering. On a more mundane, daily level, I would say when people (i.e. often tourists!) clog the sidewalk by walking 3 or 4 across and are utterly oblivious. If you are dawdling, that is totally cool and I dawdle too- but when I do I am sure to look around and make a path for my faster walking friends who have an appointment to get to!
WHAT DO YOU WEAR THAT MAKES YOU FEEL STRONG?
A well-fitting, stylish yet comfortable knee-length dress. I love putting on a one piece item and not having to worry that a shirt is tucked in weird or whatever. And I love being powerful and feminine at the same time, so I adore dresses!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WITH A BROKEN HEART?
Stay open, and you will heal stronger from this.
WHAT IS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?
A statue of Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge and creativity, a large chunk of rose quartz, 2 framed photos of me and Hubs, and a stack of books. Right now the stack of books includes a baby one- Brown Bear, Brown Bear, that I read almost every morning to ‘Lil Bub (my 16 month old son), Letting Go by Dr. David Hawkins, Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg, and Hit-makers.
WHAT GIVES YOU GOOSE BUMPS?
Connecting with another human in a deep way. It could be from a beautiful exchange at a book signing (which I got countless times during my recent speaking tour through 6 East Coast cities), an amazing conversation with a friend or a guest on my podcast, or an inside joke with Hubs or Bubs that only we get (Bubs has an amazing sense of humor and is a huge giggler!).
WHAT IS YOUR BAD DAY BACKUP PLAN?
Go for a walk with a friend, get a massage, lots of herbal tea, and have a long meditation before bed. Tomorrow is another day!
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?
How much we experience true joy, love and peace, and how much service we can be and positively impact others.
BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
Be yourself, do your best and don’t try to please everyone.
WHAT MAKES YOU FORGET TO EAT?
Writing! Hitting an amazing writing groove.
WHAT DID YOUR 8 YEAR-OLD SELF LOVE DOING?
Reading and playing in the woods!
WHAT 3 THINGS WOULD YOU GRAB IN A FIRE?
Lil Bub out of his crib!!!! Then if I had time, travel journals and old photo albums (without digital backups!).
Alignment. I believe everything is connected, including all parts of our being and each of us to one another. I feel when we are in true alignment we are in touch with the source of connection, and love and peace, which are our natural states. Negative emotions like jealousy or anger happen when we are not in complete alignment. It’s the goal we are all working towards!
Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda. It literally changed the course of my entire life. It helped me tap into myself and put me on a different path, understanding what I was seeking was actually inside of me. I’m still on the journey, and am a faithful Kriya yoga practitioner (the kind of yoga meditation Yogananda’s organization, The Self Realization Fellowship, teaches). Shortly after reading this book, I got my first book deal and started writing The Beauty Detox Solution and a lot of other big huge life changes transpired, and I attribute this book and Yogananda as a big impetus of that positive change and growth.
What is your favorite mood boosting recipe?
Hands down, the Glowing Green Smoothie. It gives you so much natural energy, and nutrition from all the minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants from the greens, lemon juice and high fiber fruit. It’s my daily morning go-to!
